Her children were conceived without the help of a man, either by slapping her hand on the ground or by eating lettuce. They were born, not out of love, but out of lust and hatred.
Hera was constantly jealous of Zeus's love affairs. She punished her rivals and her own children, both gods/goddesses and humans, with implaceable fury. She placed two serpents in the cradle of Heracles, she had Io guarded by a hundred-eyed giant, she drove the foster-parents of Dionysus mad, and tried to prevent the birth of Apollo and Artemis. Not even Zeus could stand up to her. Sometimes, when he got really angry, he would chain Hera to the mountain of Olympus by fastening anvils to her feet. Other times, he would hide the children, or turn them into animals.
The peacock and the cow are her sacred animals. The crow and the pomegranate are also dedicated to her. Other attributes include a diadem and a veil. Hera is portrayed as a majestic, solemn woman.

When Hera, Zeus' wife found out that Semele was pregnant, she disguised herself as Semele's mortal nurse. She told Semele that she wouldn't be certain whether the man who was claiming to be Zeus, really was unless he revealed himself to her. Semele blindly agreed, not known Hera's plan. When Semele asked Zeus a request, he agreed straight away. He even swore on the gods sacred river, Styx. However when Semele asked him to show himself, he regretted it. He tried to make her change her mind, but she was adamant. So, Zeus had no choice but to reveal his full thunder bolt glory, killing the frail human Semele. Before her body was cold, he took their unborn baby and sewed it to his thigh. Six months later, Dionysus was born. Tha name Dionysus means 'born twice'.
When Dionysus was born Zeus sent him to the mountains to be raised by a nmph, Nysa, after Hera recognised the infant Dionysus getting smuggled in by his aunt, Ino and her husband, Athamas. Hera drove the pair of them mad: eventually they killed their own sons. Silenus taught Dionysus the secrets of nature, and together they discovered wine.
